Call for Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research
Team Project Proposals - Academic Year 2009-2010
Attention IUPUI Faculty Members and Senior Researchers
DEADLINE for MURI Team Project Proposal for AY 2009-2010 is September 10, 2009.
DEADLINE for MURI Student Application is October 9, 2009.
Applications are sought by MURI for Academic Year 2009-2010 from all IUPUI faculty members and senior researchers who are interested in mentoring undergraduate students to conduct inter/multidisciplinary research in teams. The projects will run from October 15, 2009 through May 1, 2010.
This is a unique opportunity provided to IUPUI faculty and researchers for mentoring students while conducting pilot projects or testing new techniques and designs. Some key points regarding this year’s program are as follows:
Project Proposals
- Proposals must be submitted by using the MURI Mentor’s Project Proposal Form.
- Multidisciplinary proposals submitted by more than one mentor from different disciplines are encouraged. Graduate students and post-doctoral trainees may also serve as co-mentors on a team.
- The MURI Selection Committee will review the submitted proposals using the MURI Mentor’s Proposal Evaluation Form.
- Winning proposals for the competition will be announced by September 21, 2009.
Student Application Process
- After projects are posted to the MURI website on September 21, students applying to Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Team Projects must complete a Center for Research and Learning MURI Application Form that includes a list of the student’s ranked project choices.
- The application form must be submitted to the Center for Research and Learning no later than October 9. (Students interested in applying for these projects should use the period between September 21 and October 1 to contact project mentors to discuss objectives and requirements for individual projects.)
- Between October 1 and October 15, staff at the Center for Research and Learning will match students to teams.
- The decision for final selections of students will be made competitively by the Center for Research and Learning, in consultation with the project mentors, after the student-application deadline.
Team Composition
- Each team must be composed of students from at least two different disciplines, and teams must include at least two more students than mentors.
- Teams are encouraged to include at least one student at the college sophomore level. Teams may also include freshmen and high school students under special circumstances.
- Project proposers may request specific students in the project proposal phase and/or suggest special requirements for student participants such as a minimum GPA or number of college credits completed. The Center for Research and Learning will attempt to honor these requests as much as possible but cannot guarantee that specific students will be matched to specific teams.
Financial Support
- Each mentor (one lead and one or two co-mentors) will receive a departmental transfer of $500 which can be used for research-related expenses.
- Each project may request up to $2,000 to cover the research expenses.
- Each undergraduate student participant will receive a stipend of $1,200.
- Students who have previously received other funds through CRL for research and travel are eligible to participate, provided they do not hold a student research project grant while participating on a team as that would be considered duplication of support.
